How does HYPNOSIS work: Part 3:

Now, for more detail about Hypnosis SESSIONS and Hypnosis STYLES…………….

First, here are just some of the tools and techniques we utilize for PRE-INDUCTION:

-securing the client’s attention

-taking History: physical, mental, emotional

Throughout the HYPNOSIS session, we can use:

-desensitization

-creative visualization; involving multiple senses

-reframing: ie; symptom substitution; change in perspective

-distraction and sensory confusion

As mentioned in the last blog post, these are the stages of the hypnosis SESSION:

-Pre-induction or Mindset (not always considered a separate stage)

1)Induction

2)Deepening (the TRANCE); use of post-hypnotic suggestions

3)Coming up (out of the trance state)

PRE-INDUCTION OR MINDSET:

-hypnotist wants to develop a state of positive expectancy in the client, leading to acceptance of the trance state and rapport

-explaining hypnosis and alleviating patient’s concerns

-good time for indirect suggestions

-want client to relax and let their imagination go for a ride!

-you want voluntary agreement (and trust) to let their mind and body behave involuntarily and be responsive to the hypnotist’s suggestions

-Essential conditions wanted: motivation, removal of doubts and fears, fixation of attention

-Most failures to induce hypnosis: due to lack of adequate pre-induction and/or a perception of

a lack of confidence on the part of the hypnotherapist.

INDUCTION:

-sensory intake and motor activity are at a minimum

-language focus is on inner experiences and body

-Some techniques:

1)fixation: focus on a point; candle; pendulum, etc.

2)progressive relaxation: (ie: like used in theatre exercises)

3)relaxation with deep 4,7,8 breathing method (Dr. Andrew Weil, MD)

4)stories; visualizations (ie :bubble, golden light, clouds, etc.)

-Use: repeated suggestions given in a monotone for relaxation, heaviness and sleep; synonyms (repetition); paraphrased suggestions; connective words (ie: and…, etc.) and time designations

The hypnotist (hypnotherapist) looks for: physiological changes, such as eye movement, facial and body muscle relaxation and deeper, slower breathing

2 types of INDUCTION:

1)Formal: clear, obvious guiding of client with recognizable steps

2)Informal: indirect hypnosis, where communication can be verbal and nonverbal (body language, touch, storytelling).

This informal induction was made famous by the ‘father of modern hypnosis’, Dr Milton Erickson.

DEEPENING:

-reinforcement of induction stage to produce greater relaxation and compliance

-continue techniques for deepening trance; ie:”Breathing will relax you more” or “Background noises only serve to help focus your concentration.”

-continual focusing on internal stimuli and mental imagery

-post-hypnotic suggestions: should be positive when made

and are put into action after ending the trance

-anchors (triggers) may be used for client’s conditioned response

-use of words is important: rhythm, repetition, volume, tone.

COMING UP (OUT):

-rising and signal to awaken (from trance state): level of relaxation and hypnosis are lightened and suggestion for awakening is introduced

-count, often from 1-5 or from 1-10, along with increased mental and physical alertness (back to GRO: general reality orientation)

-give the client adequate time to arouse comfortably

-use of rising tone (voice) with suggestions for feeling refreshed, wide awake and the pleasure to be associated with the hypnotic experience.

Hypnosis STYLES:

-Authoritative (good for clenching/bruxism)

-Permissive (ie: Dr Milton Erickson)

-Combination of both

This is the last part (3) of this overview of hypnosis: what it’s for and how it works. Hypnosis is a wonderful way to connect your subconscious mind to your conscious and self-awareness. It can ‘kickstart’ your healing, learning and growth.

I’d love to hear if you have any questions or comments, about hypnosis and how it can help you!

With smiles and love,

Dr Gigi
